Is “Dieting” dangerous to your health?

Sounds like a ridiculous question? Can dieting be dangerous to your health instead of a healthy choice?

As part of the general population, it is highly likely that you have attempted at least once to follow a diet plan. You may or may not have had success at losing weight. You may have gained more weight once you stopped dieting. Sound familiar?

Have your energy levels changed?

Metabolism is your key to weight management and energy levels. Guess what the number one kill switch to your metabolism is? Calorie intake! How quickly will a low calorie diet affect you? In less than 24 hours! It is believed that a low calorie diet can suppress your thyroid function in less than 24 hours. Continuing calorie reduction for as little as one to three months increases the danger of having a permanent affect on your thyroid function (metabolism). Often, what follows is the inability to loose weight even when dieting. That’s why it is always suggested to see a medical doctor before attempting any diet plan; a rule so many people do not follow.

Want more energy?

It’s simple, food in, is energy out. Quality calories, not empty calories, in the form of fruits, vegetables, grass fed protein sources, vegetable protein sources (except soy), seeds, nuts, and high quality fats like coconut oil; yes fat!

Are your cravings driven by your stomach or your brain?

We all get a craving from time to time, but if it occurs on a daily basis, this may be your body’s language, hinting to you, that it is nutritionally starved, or at least missing some key nutrients it needs. Finding your correct balance of food intake happens naturally on its own, when the body is fed the nutrients it needs. Avoiding low quality foods like simple carbohydrates (breads, pastas, cookies, etc.) and replacing them with high quality calorie foods will help the body break the craving cycle. Simple carbs make you crave more simple carbs. Refined sugars can supply a short energy burst but are de-mineralizing among other things. They rob the body of much needed nutrition and produce a rollercoaster ride for your blood sugar levels. You will find once your dietary intake meets your body’s nutritional needs, energy levels are stable, daily cravings cease, and you do not over eat. The side benefit is your body will adjust to your ideal weight on its own.

There are also other contributing factors related to calorie burning (energy); they relate to the synergistic functions of your organs and glands. Besides mental, emotional, and physical stress, dietary stress can have an adverse affect on the proper alignment of communication and function of your body’s metabolism. The pituitary gland, thyroid gland, and adrenal glands must all be full functioning in order to regulate your metabolism. When the communication between these glands falters, your thyroid function usually suffers. Thyroxine, a hormone released by the thyroid, controls the rate at which your body burns calories for energy, and the utilization of fat as energy. Regular use of caffeine will increase your adrenal glands production of cortisol, and although cortisol is important during times of stress, continuous high levels for a prolonged period of time suppresses thyroid function. Individuals with unmanaged mental, emotional, physical, or dietary stress are prime candidates for suppressed metabolism. Nutrients like zinc, copper, selenium, iron, iodine, vitamin A, C, E, and all the B vitamins support the communication pathway of these glands. The higher your stress levels, the higher your body’s needs are for these nutrients.

Keeping the body fueled with quality calories may be your option to explore in managing your health and weight.
