Chesterfield, SC (March 31, 2014) – During the seventh round of the 250 East Coast Championship in St. Louis, team rider AJ Catanzaro earned himself his first top-5 finish of the season with a 5th place overall. AJ has been building momentum over the past several weeks in route to this finish and can only be expected to continue his hot streak during the final two rounds of the season in East Rutherford and Las Vegas. AJ finally put all of the pieces together with an excellent qualifying session, heat race, and come from behind top-5 in the main. Meanwhile, Vince Friese’s season of top-10 finishes finally came to an end when he became tangled with Alex Martin, who lost control in a rhythm lane several laps in. The unfortunate mishap came after a 3rd place start for Friese, one of his best of the year. Following the race, AJ has moved up two positions in the point standings to 12th, while Friese still holds the 5th position overall with 2 rounds remaining, only 20 points behind former points leader Adam Cianciarulo.
Prior to the main event, both Factory Metal Works riders were seeded in the first heat race. AJ had a better start than Vince out of the gate and was able to put together another solid heat race where he would finished in the 4th position after a 5th place start. Friese also qualified directly out of the first heat with a 6th place start and finishing position. It proved to be AJ Catanzaro’s night to shine as he rode well in timed practice all the way through to the main event. During practice, AJ was able to post the 6th fastest time (48.99), just a few positions above Friese who would end up 8th overall with a (49.18) lap time. Both riders were able to improve their starting positions in the main event significantly over Toronto with their much better gate picks.
