TFMW/Clubmx 2014 Supercross Season: Wrecks to Riches
Chesterfield, SC (May 16, 2014) – The opening round of East Coast racing in Arlington, Texas was expected to be the grand debut of the newly formed Factory Metal Works/Clubmx racing team. After signing proven veteran riders Vince Friese and AJ Catanzaro along with the highly touted rookie Jace Owen, it seemed that a successful east coast debut was in short order. Unbeknownst to the team, fate would have a different outcome in Texas. While in route to the stadium on February 12, just 10 miles from the venue, the team’s stacker trailer became dislodged from the RV and collided with a telephone pole, destroying it as well as much of the contents inside. It was found that someone had attempted to unhook and steal the stacker a few minutes prior to the crash at a nearby truck stop where the rig was parked.
Just like that, the team’s entire season was in jeopardy. Without any replacement trailer or bikes available, the team was forced to salvage as much of the equipment as possible before finishing the 10 mile drive to Cowboys’ Stadium in only the team RV. Despite the major setback of losing the stacker, the team was able to log a fourth place finish in the opener by team leader Vince Friese as well as a 13th from AJ Catanzaro. What happened to the team during the first round of east coast racing and how they were able to rebound showed just how much grit and fortitude the team would exhibit throughout the remainder of the season. In the following rounds the team would earn a total of 3 top-5 finishes, 10 top-10 finishes, and 1 podium. When the final checkered flag flew in Las Vegas the first year privateer effort had earned 3rd place overall in the championship standings with Vince Friese. To make the accomplishment even sweeter for the crew, it was also the first time this feat has been accomplished since the year 2000 when Greg Schnell and the Motoworld Racing team took home 3rd place. Vince feels that this is just one of the steps necessary in his racing career to finally be able to contend for a championship in 2015.
In addition to those accomplishments, the team was also proud of how the team improved during the season. AJ Catanzaro continued to show growth as a racer in his fourth year as a professional, proving that on any given night he can be a top-5 or podium threat after recording a top-5 finish in St. Louis and running up front on several occasions. Improvements were not limited to AJ and Vince as Jace Owen also was also able to build on a slow start during his first year of supercross. Jace led a heat race, displaying top-5 speed and a bright future before succumbing to shoulder injuries half way through the series. The injury forced him to end his season early in hopes of a strong outdoor series.
The team will now set it’s sights on the upcoming Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship where it will run a limited schedule, tentatively beginning at the Thunder Valley national.
